Who needs to hack Halloween, you ask? When in prior years you've been known as the Grinch of Halloween (me), you (I) need a few tricks up your (my) sleeve to get through. I'm pleasantly surprised to report that we all had a wonderful Halloween, and I wasn't grinchy at all.

George and I had a busy morning preparing all the things—candy bowls filled, dinner made, servingware set out, costumes and trick or treat bags laid ou...

I've written before about what self care does and doesn't look like for me right now, and a huge part of what it does look like is feeding myself well.

While my lunch salad is still going strong, I have a new favorite lunch lately!

This was born of me craving my favorite veggie sandwich from our town's bakery combined with the daily rain we've been experiencing and my desire to avoid lugging a heavy baby through a downpour to g...

Food is a big part of our summer plan

Here is my reference list for what to feed all these people who seem to need to be fed all the time (really though, how has the human species survived this long?). Hopefully it is helpful to you, or inspires you to make a plan, too!

cereal + banana

trail mix

fresh fruit

dried fruit

carrots / cucumbers / grape tomatoes / mini bell peppers + hummus

celery + crea...

June 1, 2019

A couple weeks ago we were swimming with friends and when we took the requisite snack break and were sharing our snacks, we went crazy over their trail mix!

I am not a "nut person," and I am REALLY not a trail mix person—there's something about the texture of raisins that gets me (and makes my teeth feel like they're crumbling?) and I don't typically like all the different nuts and dried fruit mixed together.

This trail mix, tho...

Monday! Oh, I love a Monday. (Not much has changed.)

1. To keep myself accountable for my only New Year's resolution, I've been keeping a list of the books I read as I finish them, starring the ones I liked. Up until recently, it's mainly served to remind me how much of a book rut I've been in—out of the twelve books I've finished since January, I've only liked two!

I have a feeling that's going to change. After I had my first...

How's that for a combination of topics?

I spent a few minutes this week researching spring fever. Is this a real phenomenon? My children (girls) have been OUT OF CONTROL lately. They have boundless energy, are waking at the crack of dawn, and don't listen to a blessed thing I say. I've been feeling like all I do is yell.

We've also had some of the wettest weather I remember, so we're more cooped up than usual. Come on spring! I...

April 4, 2019

Spring has sprung! The little kids and I spent about five hours outside in the (windy) sunshine yesterday, and it was glorious. It may not have topped 60 degrees, but that didn't stop the girls from donning bathing suits (with tags still on) after we picked up Eloise from school and running through the hose.

Nick has been away this week (home tonight!) and I'm pleased to report it was an uneventful week. I always say I think t...

Not something you see too often around here—a food post!

This salad has been blessing me in the lunch department for about two years now, and it's too good to not share.

When I was pregnant with George, I had two horrible health episodes which, after an ultrasound, turned out to be gallbladder attacks, likely hormonally induced. I did a little research and decided to lighten it up at lunchtime, as well as incorporate some more g...

Forgive the rambling brain dump but I have been without much free time lately--see culprit above.

1. Seasonal uniforms. Do you have one?

My winter uniform is really serving me this year. Our house is over 100 years old, and the windows are original, so it's not an exaggeration to say that you can feel an actual breeze come through our windows at times, and NJ winters don't mess around. (It was zero degrees when we were eating...

December 12, 2018

I've written before about the fruit hierarchy that exists in our house (most of which still holds true--just add in pears which are currently at the top, even above berries), and thought I'd share a little dinnertime hack that has been happening around our household because:

1. My husband is traveling so cooking is a nonstarter

2. Everyone has been sick for the past month so I'm trying to cram as much fresh food into my family a...
